Student Teaching Requirements

The Student Teaching practicum offered each fall and spring semester is scheduled as an all-day, Monday through Friday experience. LSU requirements for the student teaching experience far surpass the state minimum requirement of 270 clock hours, 180 of which must be actual teaching. A substantial portion of the 180 clock hours in actual teaching must be on an all-day basis.

To meet eligibility requirements for student teaching, you must:

  • Have both LSU and cumulative grade point averages of 2.5
  • Present official documentation of passing scores on all parts of PRAXIS I or meet the ACT/SAT waiver
  • Present official documentation of registering for and taking PRAXIS II
  • Complete ALL required course work PRIOR to student teaching. No exceptions will be made to this requirement! This does not include those courses expected to be taken concurrently with student teaching.

To apply for student teaching, you must:

  • Submit your application to the Office of Student Services no later than three weeks after the first day of class in the semester prior to student teaching. Late applicants cannot be guaranteed consideration.
  • Provide original copies of your PRAXIS I and II scores (or proof of PRAXIS II registration).
  • Attend a student teaching orientation meeting the semester prior to student teaching (see application for dates and times).

Tips for a smooth application process:

  • Register for PRAXIS II the semester prior to student teaching.
  • Visit the Office of Student Services during registration two semesters prior to student teaching (3rd to last semester) to review remaining coursework.
