General Information

Whom do I see to get permission to substitute a class?
You should seek out an advisor/counselor in the Office of Student Services to explore the possibility of a course substitution.

How do I graduate with honors?
The baccalaureate degree is awarded summa cum laude to any student whose cummulative (all System campuses) grade point average is at lest 3.895, magna cum laude if the grade point average is at least 3.795, and cum laude if the grade point average is at least 3.695. Students awarded the baccalaureate degree with honors must also have satisfied all additional requirements imposed by their colleges, schools, or departments. Two grade point averages will be computed for each student: (1) on all work completed and (2) on all work completed at LSU (all System campuses). The lower of the averages will be used to determine eligibility for honors.

Which courses count as approved electives?
An approved elective can be any level course (1000 and above) in any subject. Different majors/concentrations have different elective requirements. Please see an advisor/counselor in the Office of Student Services for requirements.

How do I obtain a degree audit?
You can obtain a degree audit from your PAWS account or the Office of Student Services.

How do I obtain the Dean’s approval?
You must see an advisor/counselor in the Office of Student Services to obtain the Dean’s approval.

How do I get Flags/Holds lifted?
You must see an advisor/counselor in the Office of Student Services. Flags can be placed if a graduation date has not been declared, if you are re-entering the University after a semester away, if you are a first semester transfer student, if you have not completed graduation checkout, if you are on scholastic warning or probation, or if you are a junior majoring in Kinesiology.

What happens if I do not make a 2.0 gpa for two consecutive semesters?
A student who fails to earn a 2.0 gpa for two consecutive semesters, regardless of overall gpa, will be dropped from the college.

How do I declare or change my graduation date?
You may declare/change your graduation date on your PAWS account through your second year. After your second year, you must submit a request in writing to one of the advisors/counselors in the Office of Student Services, stating your wish to change/declare your graduation date.

How do I forward my PAWS e-mail to my preferred e-mail account?

  • Log on to your PAWS account

  • Click “Personal Preferences” on the left-hand side

  • Click “LSU Email” on the left-hand side

  • Type in preferred e-mail address in the box on the right (next to “PAWS forwarding address”)


Where do I go to obtain information on graduate degrees within the College of Education?


Do I need to go to the Office of Student Services to drop a class?
You may drop a class through PAWS before the last day to drop. After the deadline, you must speak with an advisor/counselor to pursue possible options. See the Drop/Add section in the catalog.

What do I need to do to complete my electronic transfer into the College of Education?
After being transferred electronically into the College of Education, you must attend one of the electronic transfer orientation sessions. You will receive information regarding these sessions through e-mail. If you do not attend one of the sessions, a hold will be placed on your registration.

Teacher Education Specific

Can I select where I student teach?
No, you cannot select where you student teach. For more information, please consult the Student Teaching section of the College of Education handbook.

When do I apply for student teaching?
You apply for student teaching within the first three weeks of the semester prior to your student teaching semester. Late applicants are not guaranteed placement. Applications can be obtained from and returned to the Office of Student Services, 236 Peabody Hall. Please refer to the Student Teaching Section of the College of Education handbook.

Which PRAXIS tests do I need to take?
All education students must take Praxis I (PPST Reading, Writing & Math) or meet the ACT/SAT waiver requirement of a 22/1030 or higher score. Please call 225-578-9487 to take by computer in 137 Himes Hall or pick up a registration packet in 236 Peabody hall to schedule a paper-based exam.

  • Elementary education students will take the following Praxis II tests: Principles of Learning & Teaching: Grades K-6 #0522, and Elementary Education: Content Knowledge #0014.

  • PK-3 education students will take the following Praxis II tests: Early Childhood Education #0020 prior to 12-31-2007 or Early Childhood Education #0521 after 1-1-2007, and Elementary Education: Content Knowledge #0014.
  • Secondary education students will take Principles of Learning & Teaching: Grades 7-12 #0524 and whichever test corresponds to their area of concentration, i.e. Biology, Chemistry, English, French, Math, Social Studies, or Spanish.

  • K-12 Certification students will take one of the following: Principles of Learning & Teaching: Grades K-6 #0522, Principles of Learning & Teaching: Grades 5-9 #0523, or Principles of Learning & Teaching 7-12 #0524. and whichever test corresponds to their area  of concentration, i.e. Health and Physical Education or Art.


What are considered passing scores for PRAXIS I and II?
Consult the state requirements form or the Office of Student Services.

Whom do I see about enrolling in Education sections of Math 1100 and 1021?
You need to go to the Math department to enroll in the education sections of Math 1100 and 1021. The Math department is located in 304 Lockett Hall.

What do I do if the ETPP class I need is full?
You need to go the the Office of Student Services located in 236 Peabody Hall.

Can I work while I student teach?
It is not recommended that you work while you student teach. Student teaching is a very demanding responsibility. When you are not in the classroom, you are preparing lesson plans for the upcoming day. It is difficult to balance the requirements of the teaching practicum and another job.

What are the requirements for adding on a second area of certification?
To determine what is required for an add-on in a particular subject, we recommend contacting the State Department directly at 225/342-3490 or contacting the Office of Student Services at 225-578-2331.

How do I enroll in required Art classes?
Art education majors having difficulty enrolling in required Art classes, should speak with an advisor in the Art Department (123 Art Building).

Kinesiology Specific

What have students done in the past for their internship in Fitness Studies?
Students have interned at: Cardiac Rehab & Wellness Centers, The Cooper Institute for Aerobics Research, Corporate Wellness Facilities, Fitness Centers, Orthopedic & Sports Therapy Centers, Speed-Strength Performance Centers, United States Olympic Committee, YMCA’s, and numerous other locations.

If my major is Kinesiology, Human Movement (PT Option), will I need to take any additional classes to meet admission requirements for PT School ?
Yes, students wishing to pursue Physical Therapy School should consult with Kathy Hill or Wanda Hargroder in the Kinesiology department to obtain more information.

When should I begin my service requirements for athletic training?
Students interested in athletic training should meet with Ray Castle in the Kinesiology department to discuss the program and its requirements, including the process for formal admission into the professional phase of the program at the beginning of their freshmen year.

What can I do with a Kinesiology degree?
Many of our LSU graduates have gone into the following fields: Physical Therapy, Medical, Physician's Assistant, Occupational Therapy, Kinesiotherapy, Pharmaceutical sales, Cardiac Rehab, Chiropractor, Podiatry, Day Care Center/Nursery Schools, Equipment Management, Physical Education, Coaching, Corporate Fitness, Personal Trainer, Health Fitness Director, Sports Management, Athletic Director, Medical Equipment Sales, YMCA/YWCA, Scout Camps, Sports/Exercise Equipment sales, Community Recreation Center, Non-Profit Organizations, Military, Firefighting, Publishing, Professional Sports Teams, Referees/Umpires, Sporting Goods Manufacturing.
