WOMEN’S & GENDER STUDIES GRADUATE ORGANIZATION: Sept. 18th meeting

The Women's and Gender Studies Graduate Organization (WGSGO at LSU) is hosting its first General Meeting this Friday, September 18, from 4-5pm at the Women's Center (Raphael Semmes, off of Highland, behind the Old President's House). Refreshments will be provided.

WGSGO is an interdisciplinary organization which provides graduate students who have gender-based, feminist research and teaching interests, opportunities for professional development and social activities. “Grants for Grads” Program Taking Applications

With commencement ceremonies celebrating our state’s latest graduating classes, the Louisiana Housing Finance Agency would like to remind college grads to register for its new “Grants for Grads” Program.

The new program allows graduates of colleges and universities in the state to register and possibly be selected to receive a grant toward the purchase of their first home.  Once a student graduates, he/she has 60 days to register with the LHFA.  The grad agrees to live and work in the state for 5 consecutive years.   Beginning as early as 2013, the qualified applicants will be entered into a lottery with one hundred individuals being selected each year.  The grant will equal the total state income tax paid by the qualified applicant during the 5 year period, with a maximum award of $10,000 per individual grantee or $15,000 per qualified married couple.

The program was crafted and enacted by the state legislature during the 2008 session to retain the states talented individuals.  The LHFA has been accepting applications since October for all applicants who graduated prior to October 1, 2008 with the deadline being December 1, 2008.  All graduates receiving degrees after October 1, 2008 and in subsequent years must register within 60 days of graduation.  Applications can be found and submitted on the agency’s website at www.lhfa.state.la.us.

“Each year our state colleges and universities produce great minds and talented individuals,” said LHFA President Milton Bailey.  “The Grants for Grads Program is designed to help encourage those graduates to stay in Louisiana and put down their roots.  Purchasing a home is a great way to put down roots and establish themselves members of a community and we look forward to assisting them with that step.”
