Caps for Katrina

To remember the victims of Hurricane Katrina, the eighth-grade students of the Louisiana State University Laboratory School are collecting water bottle caps. The caps will be used to construct a memorial at the Lab School. The goal of the project is to collect at least one water bottle cap to represent each person victimized by Hurricane Katrina. This includes the people who perished in the storm and anyone who applied for FEMA housing assistance, totaling 951,600 people.

Water bottle caps as a memorial were chosen to represent the flood waters, to express gratitude for the water provided during hurricane relief efforts, to emphasize its necessity for human life, and to increase awareness of it as a precious part of the economy and recreation in the state of Louisiana.

Anyone can donate a cap. The Lab School eighth-graders would love to receive any personal experiences regarding the hurricane along with your water cap; these stories may be shared, with your permission, on the Web site, www.uhigh.lsu.edu. Caps will be collected until their goal is reached. For more information, contact Kim Henley at 225-578-8156 or khenle1@lsu.edu. If you would like to participate, please send water bottle caps to:
