In Defense of Good TeachingCollege of Education Assistant Professor Margaret-Mary Sulentic Dowell was awarded the 2007 Kenneth S. Goodman “In Defense of Good Teaching” Award and was honored at the Literature and Literacy for Children Conference held in Tucson, Arizona on March 3, 2007. The internationally recognized award was named after Goodman for his advocacy efforts for teachers, political action, and holistic education. Sulentic Dowell was nominated for the Goodman award based on her personal dedication to literacy efforts in the East Baton Rouge Parish School System and for her economic and social sacrifice in pursuing those efforts. |
At a reception held in her honor, Sulentic Dowell delivered a keynote address, entitled “Education for Sale: A Tale of Falling from Favor.” “Receiving this award was a personal and career highlight as it recognized the personal cost of perseverance in overcoming adversity, while maintaining my ethics and values as they pertained to literacy learning and teaching,” said Sultentic Dowell. “It was quite an experience.” |
