Students Honored with Service Scholarships College of Education doctoral student Jolanta Smolen (pictured above/left), and Kimberly Storm (pictured above/right), kinesiology senior, were awarded the Tom W. Dutton Scholarship Award. The scholarship is presented to a female undergraduate or graduate student for outstanding service to the university community through participation and leadership in community service activities while attending LSU. Smolen was honored for her work with Delta Express, a tutorial program organized by COE that addresses the needs of children who reside in a post-Katrina FEMA trailer park known as the Renaissance Village. Smolen is the campus coordinator and spends several hours every week engaging students in arts and crafts, physical fitness, and, most importantly, their homework. Storm was recognized for her extensive involvement in campus activities and volunteer work. Storm is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, Order of Omega, Rho Lambda, Mortar Board, National Society for Collegiate Scholars, and National Scholars Honor Society. She is the president of Rotaract, an officer in Best Buddies, and past-president of Volunteer LSU. Tom Dutton was a member of the LSU Board of Supervisors from 1940-1967 and served as the Vice-Chair from 1940-44 and the chairman from 1950-52. |
