The Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) Fraternity will be hosting a benefit lunch for Vickey Barrett on Tuesday, April 15 from 11 - 2 pm. Barrett was the SAE house mom last year.
Tickets are being sold through Friday, April 11th and donations will be accepted on Mama V’s behalf at any time. The lunch includes a generous portion of jambalaya, bread, and dessert. Lunch orders can be delivered to businesses or picked-up at the SAE house, 3743 W. Lakeshore Drive, the day of the event.
Vickey Barrett was diagnosed with brain cancer after doctors discovered four tumors. She had surgery in January to remove the largest tumor, and radiation treated the remaining three. Unfortunately, the cancer has metastasized, and she is now undergoing chemotherapy for lung cancer. Mama V is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Social Work, and because of her treatments, she is not able to attend school or be employed at this time. With the entire SAE chapter’s support, we decided to put on the lunch benefit to raise money to defray Mama V’s expenses and help her get back on her feet.
Derek Mitchell, SAE Philanthropy Chair, said, “This is slowly becoming a Greek-wide supported event. After speaking to the fraternity and sororities presidents on LSU’s campus, the SAEs have experienced a tremendous response from most all of them. We’re excited about their willingness to purchase tickets to help out. We’re also attempting to also get the LSU community involved so they can contribute to Mama V’s recovery as well.”
Mitchell also said, “Mama V is respected and appreciated by the men in our fraternity. The encouragement she provided for us and the testament of her faith she displayed in her life will always be appreciated. She has found more than just a home with SAE, she got ninety ‘sons’ who love and support her.”
