The College of Education hosted a Centennial Lecture on January 29, 2009 from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. in the LSU Laboratory School Auditorium. Penn State University Professor of Exercise and Sport ScienceScott Kretchmar led the lecture entitled, "Movement and the Human Body: How Much Attention Do They Deserve in Education?”
In an era of childhood obesity, chronic diseases fostered by sedentary living, and rising health care costs, many argue that movement and body-related issues deserve more educational attention than they currently receive. This is a powerful argument, but Kretchmar worries that too strong a focus on health will result in the continued marginalization of physical education and other body-related disciplines. While human movement has important effects on health, Kretchmar will suggest that physical activity is related to our education—from pre-school through college and beyond—in far more fundamental ways. Kretchmar will argue that these foundations for physical activity need to be appreciated if movement and the human body are ever to receive the educational attention they deserve.
Kretchmar is a founding member of the International Association for the Philosophy of Sport and served as its President. He also is a past President and Fellow of the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education. He is the founding editor of the Journal of Intercollegiate Sport and served as editor of the Journal of the Philosophy of Sport. Kretchmar has authored a popular text in the philosophy of sport and has written numerous articles on ethics, the nature of sport, and the operation of human intelligence in physical activity. He was named Alliance Scholar for AAHPERD in 1996, received the Distinguished Scholar Award from NAPEHE in 1997, and was honored as Distinguished Scholar for the International Association for the Philosophy of Sport in 1998 and again in 2006. Kretchmar served as Chair of the Department of Kinesiology at Penn State on two occasions, has been President of the University Faculty Senate, and currently serves as the Faculty Athletics Representative to the NCAA.
