The Myra Sadker Foundation recognized Department of Kinesiology doctoral candidate Elizabeth Domangue with a $2,000 Sadker Award for her dissertation work on gender equity in physical fitness testing.

Myra Sadker was a pioneer in gender equity research until she died of cancer in 1995. The Myra Sadker Foundation was established in her honor by her husband, David Sadker. The Foundation selects recipients whose research supports the ideals of Myra’s work.

Domangue’s dissertation involves using critical feminist theories to deconstruct differences in fitness testing expectations for boys and girls, and how these differences affect students psychologically. With this research Domangue hopes to examine the implications of how students embody fitness testing, and how it affects a participant’s future.

“The work Myra did was huge for gender equity. This work has always been a part of me, so to be recognized was very meaningful. I don’t have words to describe how significant it was to have David Sadker himself call to congratulate me,” Domangue said.

Sadker also provided encouragement that Domangue will use throughout her career: “Don’t ever underestimate your qualitative work in a field where numbers matter. That’s how the students’ voices get heard.”

Domangue will finish her dissertation this year.
