Summer 2008 Gifted Summer Program
Hosted by Faculty Member

Jennifer Jolly

LSU College of Education Assistant Professor Jennifer Jolly from the Department of Educational Theory, Policy, and Practice hosted a two-week Gifted Summer Program that assisted children in creating an independent study project.

The students used the vast resources of the Louisiana State Museum and the Louisiana State Library to plan, research, and prepare independent study projects that focused on an in-depth exploration of Louisiana.

The program highlights included low facilitator to child ratio, access to authentic and primary resources of information, development of research skills, challenging material and activities, and collaboration with peers of similar abilities and interests. Additionally, camp participants interacted with LSU gifted education students.

This program served as the practicum for College of Education students enrolled in the gifted education capstone course. As such, students had the opportunity to apply what they’ve learned in all of their previous coursework.

The 2008 Gifted Education Camp was such a success that the college will continue to use it as the college’s practicum placement. Not only did the students attending the camp learn about Louisiana but the LSU students also gained a greater working knowledge of the independent study model and educational resources that are located locally in downtown Baton Rouge. Jolly will be presenting this model and her findings at the April 2009 annual conference of the Council for Exceptional Children in Seattle, Washington.
