Professors Partner with BREC on Fall Family Fitness Fair
The LSU College of Education
Department of Kinesiology teamed
up with BREC on a fitness
program designed for children
to increase physical activity
and improve health. The “Fall Family Fitness
Fair” kicked-off at
BREC’s Anna T. Jordan
Community Park on
November 15, 2008.
According to the
organization’s Web
site, BREC operates
184 neighborhood
public park and
recreation facilities
and programs
throughout East
Baton Rouge Parish,
Louisiana. This award-winning
agency features
a wide variety of quality
facilities with family-oriented leisure activities for all ages and population
groups.
The Fall Family Fitness Fair
and its affiliated programs
encourage children to
attend supervised afterschool
playground
activities that combine
fitness with fun.
The many activities
offered will come
from Play On!, a
book authored
by Department
of Kinesiology
Assistant Professor
Russell L. Carson
and Biological
and Agricultural
Engineering Professor
Marybeth Lima. Cosponsored
by the
American Association
for Physical Activity and Recreation and PlayCore, the activities
will occur five days a week for a period
of six months.
Children also completed the
FitnessGram assessment at the launch
event.
FitnessGram, developed in 1982
by the Cooper Institute, was designed
to help teachers and parents stay
abreast of their children’s fitness levels.
The Department of Kinesiology will
use the FitnessGram assessment data
for analysis and future endeavors that
combat childhood obesity locally and
beyond.
