Carson’s academic scholarship has focused on the psychological processes of teachers. His initial research examined the theoretical and conceptual underpinnings of physical education teacher motivation. He has extended this work to all teachers, and is particularly interested in understanding how teachers’ emotions, job satisfaction, and commitment transpire over the course of a school day. Currently, he is studying the proposed linkage between teachers’ daily emotional encounters and burnout; a study funded by The Spencer Foundation that has utilized both mixed methodologies and innovative technology (i.e., Personal Digital Assistants). His work has been shared at national and international professional conferences.
Besides his scholarly involvement, Carson’s dedication to his students and personal pedagogy is unyielding. Whether it was teaching/coaching international secondary students in Rome, Italy, supervising student teachers at both the elementary and secondary levels, or now instructing methods and curriculum design classes to undergraduate and graduate students alike, Carson is a deeply committed to experience-driven education. In 2004, Carson was awarded the Graduate Teaching Certificate and the Advanced Graduate Teaching Certificate for his excellent classroom teaching and scholarship of teaching and learning while at Purdue University. Moreover, Carson is an active member of the American Educational Research Association (AERA), the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (AAHPERD), and the Louisiana AHPERD (LAHPERD). He received the 2005 Service Award at Purdue University and was a 2008 WAFB-TV Power of 9 Honoree for his worthy contributions to his academic field, department, and local community. He has administered service-learning programs that provides weekly physical activity to children displaced by Hurricane Katrina. He is currently co-coordinating Playground Kidz, an afterschool physical activity program that encourages parents and children to use local BREC playgrounds as a means for exercise and fun.
