ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITIES
Welcome to the College of Education website. I am honored to be a part of the long history of excellence and build on the traditions of the past at LSU. At the same time, I am proud to represent a college that is playing such a central role in bridging to the 21st century.
The College of Education houses the Department of Educational Theory, Policy, and Practice and the Department of Kinesiology, in addition to our K-12 University Laboratory School. Each of the two academic departments has five divisions. We have approximately 1,200 undergraduate and 400 graduate students pursuing a wide variety of degrees. We are the largest producer of teachers in the state. In addition, we have approximately 1,300 students attending the Lab School, which was founded almost 90 years ago in 1915.
The vision of the College of Education is to strengthen its leadership position throughout Louisiana and among its peers nationally and internationally in the improvement of education, wellness, and healthcare promotion at all levels and in all settings. The mission of the college is to advance the quality of education and wellness by preparing professional practitioners and leaders for improving education and healthcare promotion in all settings and by advancing research and scholarship. The College of Education recognizes that improving education and wellness can lead to economic development and to the improvement of quality of life nationally as well as for the citizens of Louisiana.
The College of Education is committed to the Land Grant mission and the National Flagship Agenda of the university. Against the backdrop of increased accountability and productivity demands on public institutions and the urgent need for universities to provide solutions to cross-disciplinary and complex problems faced by our society, we are striving to become a college of engagement. According to the Kellogg Commission Report, Returning to our Roots: The Engaged Institution, an engaged institution 1) is organized to respond to the needs of today’s and tomorrow’s students, 2) enriches students’ experiences by bringing research and engagement into the curriculum, and 3) puts resources in the form of knowledge and expertise to work on the problems faced by the communities it serves. In each of these areas, we have exhibited our commitment to becoming an engaged unit.
Working within our academic and professional communities, students, faculty, and staff are striving to reflect and communicate our varied and significant contributions to our local communities, state, and nation. Through this Website, as well as through our friends and advocates in the Peabody Society, donors and supporters, college publications and outreach, and the continued contributions of outstanding faculty, students, and staff, we hope you will have many opportunities to explore and experience the excellence that IS the LSU College of Education – on the move!
Sincerely,
M. Jayne Fleener, Ph.D.
