Sassy Wheeler

Sassy C. Wheeler received her PhD in special education with an emphasis on mild/moderate disabilities from the University of New Orleans. In 2002 she obtained a M.Ed. from the University of New Orleans. She graduated cum laude from Southern University in 1997 with a bachelor’s in psychology. Her areas of research interests include social support, inclusive educational practices, learning disabilities, and culturally and linguistically diverse populations.
Wheeler is currently the clinical supervisor of student teaching in the Department of Educational Theory, Policy, and Practice at LSU. In 2006 she taught a course on education and diverse populations for the College of Education and prior to that she was an instructor for several courses at the University of New Orleans. From 1999-2003 Wheeler worked with students who had emotional and learning disabilities at John Ehret High School and West Jefferson High School in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana.
Wheeler is a member of the Council for Exceptional Children, Council for Children with Behavioral Disorders, Council for Learning Disabilities, and the National Association of University Women. While at LSU, Wheeler would like to focus her research agenda on increasing community involvement for undergraduate students and improving social support structures available to in-service teachers.
