Robbie McHardy received her PhD in education in 1982 from Columbia University. She also earned three master’s degrees: one in philosophy of education and one in the education of the academically gifted from Columbia University, along with a M.Ed. in special education from the University of New Orleans in 1977. In 1973 she received her B.S. in elementary education from LSU.

Before joining the LSU Department of Curriculum and Instruction in 1995, McHardy taught first grade at the University Laboratory School from 1984 to 1995. During that time she supervised student teaching and won several grants. She was with the Louisiana Department of Education from 1982 to 1984 where she was the state supervisor of Programs for the Gifted and Talented. She was also a founding member of the National Association for State Supervisors of the Gifted and on the board of directors for the founding of the Louisiana School for Math, Science and the Arts in Natchitoches, Louisiana.

McHardy is a member of the World Organization for the Gifted and Talented, the American Educational Research Association, and several other professional organizations. In 1980, the National Association for Gifted Children named her Graduate Student of the Year. In 1983, she played a role in the development of the federal report, A Nation at Risk. In 1993 she received a Distinguished Teaching Award from Duke University.

Although she has been an instructor in the College of Education for 23 years, McHardy was recently rehired as an assistant professor of gifted education when that program was expanded. She will be teaching gifted and talented and elementary mathematics methods classes. Her research will be focused on teacher education within the field of gifted education and on minority representation in gifted programs.
