Lou's major research interests center around the effects and factors moderating technology-mediated instruction and collaborative learning, including:
- Individual and small group learning with technology
- distance education
- online teaching and learning
- between-group collaboration
- learning community
- project-based learning
- scaffolding
- feedback model, and
- evidence-based technology integration.
Methodology-wise, Lou conducts both empirical research and quantitative research synthesis.
