Programs of Study
General Policies
This section is intended to assist you in understanding select policies of which you should be aware. Please refer to the LSU General Catalog for further information. If you have questions about a particular policy, you are encouraged to contact the Office of Student Services (236 Peabody Hall, 225-578-2331) for clarification. You may also e-mail questions to edinfo@lsu.edu.
The LSU General Catalog states, “Each student is personally responsible for completing all requirements established for his or her degree by the University, college, and department. It is the student’s responsibility to learn these requirements. A student’s counselor may not assume these responsibilities. Any substitution, waiver, or exemption from any established requirement or academic standard may be accomplished only with the approval of the student’s dean. Exceptions to University requirements, including general education requirements, will be authorized only with approval of the student’s dean and the Office of Academic Affairs.”
English Proficiency
Students must earn a grade of “C” or better in one of the following courses or have the equivalent in transfer credit: ENGL 2000, 1003, 1005 (international students), 2001, or 2002. Students who fail to earn a “C” or better must repeat the course. This requirement must be completed to be admitted to a specific teacher education program.

GPA Maintenance
A student on scholastic probation will be dropped from the college for failure to earn a 2.0 grade point average in any one semester. A student who fails to earn a 2.0 semester average in any one semester, regardless of overall grade point average, will be placed on college warning. To be removed from college warning, a student must earn a 2.0 or better semester grade point average, remediate course deficiencies, and make satisfactory progress in the degree program. A student who fails to earn a 2.0 gpa for two consecutive semesters, regardless of overall grade point average, will be dropped from the college. If this occurs, a student has until the last day to add classes of the next semester to find a new senior college. Students should also schedule an appointment with Lisa Newman, Academic Counselor in the Office of Student Services, to determine requirements for re-admittance into the college.
“I” Grades
An “I” grade can be assigned only for work of passing quality that is incomplete for reasons beyond your control. Your instructor can assign an “I” grade only after you receive authorization from the College of Education. In order to receive authorization, you must report to the Office of Student Services and provide documentation verifying the circumstances that prevent you from completing your work. “I” grades must be removed before the last day to add classes during the next regular semester (fall or spring) in which you are in residence at LSU. Generally, the College of Education does not award “I” grades when dropping classes is still an option.
“F” Grades
If you receive an “F” in a course, you must repeat the course in the LSU System to receive credit and quality points for it. You will not be allowed to take the same course for credit outside of the LSU system.
Grade Appeals
Please consult your LSU Undergraduate/Graduate Catalog for the grade appeal process.
Drop/Add Classes
You may add courses, via PAWS or Reggie, from the beginning of the course scheduling period through the last day to add courses for each semester. You may drop courses via PAWS or REGGIE until midnight on the final date to drop courses. To add or drop a class after the deadline, you must speak with an advisor/counselor in the Office of Student Services to determine if your circumstances warrant a retroactive add or drop.
Request to Take Proficiency Exams
You are not allowed to schedule proficiency exams in courses that you have earned unsatisfactory grades. Proficiency exam requests must be approved by the department offering the course and by the College of Education. Forms are available in the Office of Student Services.
Resignation from the University
Resignation is initiated in the Office of Student Services. You will not be allowed to resign from the university using REGGIE or your PAWS account. Students enrolled in student teaching/internships must meet with the Coordinator of Field Experiences prior to submitting a resignation form. Forms are available in the Office of Student Services.
Excused Absences
Policy Statement 22 (posted on the LSU website, www.lsu.edu) governs university policy regarding absences: “The course instructor will determine the validity of a student’s reason(s) for absences and will assist those students who have valid reasons. Valid reasons for absences include: Illness, serious family emergency, special curricular activities such as judging trips or field trips, court-imposed legal obligations such as subpoenas or jury duty, military obligations, serious weather conditions, religious holidays, participation in varsity athletic competitions or university musical events. The student is responsible for providing documentation of the reason for the absence, if such is required by the instructor. Should the instructor and the student disagree over the validity of a reason for an absence, the student has the right to appeal the instructor’s decision according to the general appeal procedure in Policy Statement 48 (posted on the LSU website, www.lsu.edu).” The dean of the College of Education determines the validity of a student’s reason for absence only in the case of group excuses for absences. Forms for requesting such approval are available in the Office of Student Services.
Correspondence Courses
Up to one-fourth of the number of hours required for the baccalaureate degree may be taken through the Division of Continuing Education by correspondence study. Students registered in the College may enroll in a maximum of 19 semester hours of combined resident and correspondence course work during a regular semester (12 semester hours in the summer). All correspondence course work must be completed prior to the final semester of your program. This means that the Office of Independent Study must have posted receipt of all lessons and administration of all exams no later than the week prior to the first day of classes. It is required that teacher education majors complete all correspondence course work two semesters prior to student teaching.
Residency Requirement
The College of Education requires you to complete the final 25% of your program in residence on this campus. Thus, if you are in a 128-hour degree program, you must complete your last 32 hours in residence in the College of Education. Participation in programs such as LSU Academic Programs Abroad, National Student Exchange, and Southern University Cooperative Programs, must be approved through the Office of Student Services. Exceptions to college requirements must be approved by the dean through the Office of Student Services. Forms are available in the Office of Student Services.
Baton Rouge Community College Cross-Enrollment
You must obtain approval from the College of Education for cross enrollment in courses at Baton Rouge Community College. Approved course work taken at BRCC will be recorded as transfer credit. Once you have earned one-half of the credits required for a bachelor’s degree, you will not be eligible to earn credit in this--or any other--two year college outside of the LSU System. Forms for requesting approval to cross enroll at BRCC are available in the Office of Student Services.
Southern University Cooperative Programs
You must obtain written approval from the College of Education for cross enrollment in courses at Southern University. Approved course work taken at Southern University will be recorded as transfer credit. You will not be allowed to cross enroll in more than one course per semester at Southern University. Forms for requesting approval to cross enroll at Southern University are available in the Office of Student Services.
Enrollment in 3000 or 4000 Level Teacher Education Classes
To be eligible for enrollment in 3000 or 4000 level teacher education classes (EDCI & ELRC), you must have both LSU and cumulative grade point averages of 2.5. In addition, documentation of your passing PRAXIS I scores must be on file in the Office of Student Services. Students who are not eligible to enroll in upper level EDCI or ELRC courses will be purged from those classes, including those students for whom no passing scores are on file. It is the student’s responsibility to contact the Office of Student Services to confirm that passing scores are on file.
Procedure for Appeal
A student has the right to petition for an exception to a requirement, rule, and/or decision. A faculty or staff suggestion that a student submit a request should not be considered as support of such a request. A petition for exception will not be considered without a written request accompanied by specific information documenting the reason(s) for the request. Exceptions to University and/or college requirements will be authorized only with approval of the dean and/or the Office of Academic Affairs. The student will be contacted within ten working days as to the status of appeal. Appeal forms are available in the Office of Student Services.
Concentrated Study Period
he five-day period during the fall and spring semesters (Wednesday through Sunday) immediately preceding the week of final examinations will be set aside as a concentrated study period. During this time, no extracurricular student activities, such as social and athletic events, will be held on- or off-campus. There should be no required major examinations in academic courses, other than those considered laboratory courses. There should be no graded course work counting for more than 10% of a student’s final grade. However, class projects placed on the syllabus within the first two weeks of class are exempt. Any exceptions to this policy must receive prior approval from the Office of Academic Affairs. If a professor has violated the concentrated study period guidelines, please report the instructor’s name, course and section number, day and time of class, violation day and time and a summary of the problem to Student Government at 225-578-8728 or SG@lsu.edu or visit the SG Office 324 Union. When reporting a violation, the student is not required to leave his/her name.
