Individuals who wish to complete teacher certification in a four year program enroll in this concentration, a teacher preparation curriculum leading to K-12 certification in Health and Physical Education. It is recommended that students also take courses leading to another teaching area (minor).

This program requires the completion of 128 semester hours including core courses in general education and kinesiology. Individuals in this concentration must maintain a 2.5 GPA. The health and physical education certification concentration consists of 54 hours of course work that focus on teaching methods and activities. Courses in the certification concentration include observations and mini-teaching field experiences in schools. A semester of student teaching provides the culminating experience in the certification concentration.

Frequently Asked Questions for K-12 Health And Physical Education Certification Program

What will I be qualified to teach when I graduate?

This concentration leads to certification for teaching in Louisiana and most other states. The certification program prepares a student to teach grades K-12 in physical education and health.

When do I student teach?

You will student teach during your last semester. It will require a full day at the school to which you are assigned by the student teaching office.

Can I take other courses while I student teach?

No, it is recommended that you finish all course work before student teaching your last semester.

Do I need to take any other exams to become a teacher?
You must take the PRAXIS I & PRAXIS II.

When should I take this exam?
Students must meet minimum criteria and have acceptable scores on PRAXIS I to be formally admitted to the certification program. Students are expected to take the required PRAXIS II assessments during the last semester of course work prior to student teaching.

Does the Department of Kinesiology have a placement service?
No, but LSU has a Career Services Center. One of the many services they provide is a Teacher Recruitment Day where over 25 states come to our campus to interview potential teachers.

Professional Organizations

Students interested in teaching, coaching or supervision are strongly encouraged to join The American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance as a student and continue membership throughout their career. This organization is designed to support, encourage and provide assistance to professionals as they initiate, develop and conduct programs in health, leisure, and movement-related activities. Students may want to join this organization at the state level known as the Louisiana Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (LAPHERD). Membership is inexpensive and students receive the LAHPERD Journal, newsletters reporting state activities, recent research and an update on the LAHPERD convention. Student members are eligible for professional liability insurance, which is encouraged during student teaching.
