Athletic Training ***

Curriculum Content Areas

As part of the criteria to meet standards/guidelines for accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE), the Concentration in Athletic Training is required to document where all educational competencies (cognitive; psychomotor; affective; and clinical proficiencies) are taught throughout the curriculum.  For athletic training education programs, there are approximately 1,300 educational competencies and approximately 700 clinical skills (clinical proficiencies) that must be verified are taught in the degree program.  All educational competencies and clinical proficiencies required of students to complete prior to graduation are published in the NATA Athletic Training Educational Competencies, 4th Ed (2006), which students receive formal instruction, practice opportunities and initial assessment, opportunities for clinical integration and re-assessment.  The educational competencies are categorized in the following areas:

  • Risk Management and Injury Prevention
  • Pathology of Injuries and Illnesses
  • Orthopedic Clinical Examination and Diagnosis
  • Medical Conditions and Disabilities
  • Acute Care of Injury and Illness
  • Therapeutic Modalities
  • Conditioning and Rehabilitative Exercise
  • Pharmacology
  • Psychosocial Intervention and Referral
  • Nutritional Aspects of Injuries and Illnesses
  • Health Care Administration
  • Professional Development and Responsibilities

Additionally, students must receive formal instruction in the following expanded subject matter areas in conjunction with the NATA Athletic Training Educational Competencies:
