Welcome to the Department of Kinesiology, one of three academic departments in the College of Education. The mission of the Department of Kinesiology is the generation, dissemination, and application of knowledge concerning the physiological, psychological, biomechanical, and pedagogical factors related to human movement. The undergraduate program has five concentrations: Fitness Studies, Health and Physical Education Certification, Human Movement Science, Sport Studies, and Athletic Training. The study of human movement is an exciting scientific field and the Department of Kinesiology at LSU has a nationally respected faculty in a department that is recognized as one of the leading programs in the United States. We offer a faculty-supported environment and are committed to quality undergraduate instruction in all aspects of Kinesiology. Faculty members are interested in your personal as well as your academic development and will highlight this intention by being committed to the highest standards of excellence in teaching. We share the research, teaching, and service goals of the state’s flagship university and undergraduate education is essential to this mission.
Students wishing to enter the Department of Kinesiology must satisfy the following:
- English proficiency - Students must have advanced placement, have credit for, or a grade of "C" or better in ENGL 1001 (1004) and 1002 (1003/1005)
- Math proficiency - Students must have advanced placement, have credit for, or a grade of "C" or better in MATH 1020/1021 and 1022; and
- Biology proficiency - Students must have advanced placement, have credit for, or a grade of "C" or better in BIOL 1201, 1208, 1202, and 1209
- GPA - Students must have have a 2.5 GPA
Students in the K-12 certification program must have passing scores on the PRAXIS I assessments prior to student teaching. PRAXIS II assessments are to be taken during the last semester of coursework prior to student teaching. Students must pass all required sections of the PRAXIS skills in order to graduate.
Employment Opportunities: Graduates of the Department of Kinesiology have experienced success in their careers upon completion of their degree programs. Our graduates have established a successful track record in gaining admittance to professional schools in the medical field, as well as to other graduate programs. Our students have also performed well on certification examinations within their specializations, such as the PRAXIS Examination, National Athletic Training Examination and ACSM Certifications. Graduates have enjoyed extraordinary success in the job market and have obtained positions that are congruent with their personal and professional goals.
