Concentration in Athletic Training

Cohort Selection Criteria for Professional Phase

Those students admitted through the application process then begin the three-year (6 semesters) clinical education component of the Concentration in Athletic Training.  Typically eleven (11) students are accepted per year (Fall only).  During that time, students partake in both didactic and clinical education during each of the six semesters.   The following policy pertains to selection criteria into the Professional Phase of the Concentration in Athletic Training:

Effective with students applying to begin their formal clinical component (approved to take KIN 3505 – Athletic Training Practicum) of the Concentration in Athletic Training in the Fall 2008 semester, the following criteria and information will be used to determine the maximum number of students that the Concentration in Athletic Training will accept and maintain on a yearly basis:

General Criteria and Information

  • Semester when students initially approved to enroll in KIN 3505 – Athletic Training Practicum:   Fall semester following application year
  • Maximum Number of Students Accepted Per Academic Year: 11
  • Maximum Total Number of Students in KIN 3505: 33
  • Final determination of coursework and GPA requirements:  end of Spring semester
  • Each student must meet the minimum requirements of the concentration (completion of required coursework, minimum GPA, physical examination with technical standards, etc.).

Specific Selection Criteria

  1. Admission will be granted to a maximum of 11 students who achieve a final combined score of 80.00% or higher on the volunteer application materials.
    1. If more than 11 students achieve the 80.00% or higher score, then the students will be ranked according to their final combined scores, with the top 11 students selected for admission.
    2. If two or more students obtain the same final combined score, then the students will be ranked according to the following calculation:  GPA (cumulative GPA on all college work) * CREDITS (total credit hours taken).
  2. If less than 11 students meet the criteria set forth in #1 above, then the Concentration in Athletic Training reserves the right to select students, up to the 11 maximum, based on the students’ final combined score.  Any student with a final combined score less than 75.00% will not be accepted into the clinical component of the program.
  3. After the Concentration in Athletic Training reaches the maximum number of students in the clinical component (33 students), the concentration then reserves the right to accept more than 11 students in any given year based on total number of students participating in the clinical component of the concentration.  More than 11 students may be selected due to attrition with student(s) already participating in the clinical component of the concentration.  In this case, prospective students must meet the criteria outlined above.
